Russian Language Meetups

There are three prominent Russian language meetup groups that you can choose between, depending on your interests:

The New York City Russian Language Meetup Group is open to everyone who has an interest in Russian and is associated with Russia some way or another. With 1,492 speakers, this group was started in 2003 and has come a long way, making many a Russian language enthusiast perfectly fluent and confident. All you need to do is to join and donate $ 1 if you are in the mood.

Westchester Russian Language and Social Group is another group for all ages. It has 91 members and charges a $ 1 fee for attending meetings. You are open to suggest topics, locations and activities for future get-togethers in this group. A great place for some relaxed conversation and developing friendship.

The 4th Avenue Brooklyn Russian Language Meetup Group

With 469 speakers coming from various backgrounds and with varying levels of expertise, this group has many Russian enthusiasts who are interested in everything Russian, from language and movies to music, culture and art. The group regularly organises picnics, competitions, film nights and more!

Russian Clubs

New York City Professionals Russian Club

This is club is mostly for professionals rather than students. New York City Professionals Russian Club organises impromptu get togethers, fund raising, reading sessions and much more. This is a much more mature crowd of professional Russians and those interested in Russian language.

Russian Writers’ Club

Russian Writers’ Club has about 50 Russian writers whose works get published by the club and also in the club almanacs. They also have a newspaper Litereraturni Vestnik which you can read. A great place to get acquainted with Russian intellectuals.

New York Russian Ski Club

For those interested in winter sports The New York Russian Ski Club is a great option. This club is for those who speak Russian and membership is only through the recommendation of the sponsors. If you have a higher level of Russian, this club could be of great help as it has many members with whom you can speak Russian.

Russian Heritage Festival

Russian Heritage Festival is a month long arts and culture event organised by the Russian immigrant community of New York. The festival takes place in the month of June and attracts lots of people from all over New York. Events include exhibitions on art, sports and health fairs, dance and folk music performances, business expos and much more. This is again a great place to be exposed to a number of Russian activities and events, all in one place.

Russian Documentary Film Festival in New York

The Russian Documentary Film Festival in New York takes place at the Tribeca Cinemas in the month of September. The festival brings you closer to the history, culture and great personalities of Russia through documentaries made on various topics and people who have affected Russia one way or another. Here, you can also see the convergence of Russian directors and talks on film issues and trends.

Russian Winter Festival

The Russian Winter Festival is a celebration of Russian folk art, culture and traditions, a means to raise awareness among the people of New York through a number of activities and help them understand and appreciate the finer aspects of Russian heritage. This month long festival has all the ingredients of a vibrant occasion with art exhibitions, food, films, dance, music, competitions and much more. An admission fee of $5 for adults and $3 for children seems nominal for a day of perfect fun and learning.

To provide better riding comfort and safety to train passengers, Indian Railways has acquired two state-of-the-art rail grinding machines (RGMs).

These machines help in grinding rails periodically to enhance the safety and comfort of passengers. The prototype machines have been provided at Allahabad and to the South Central Railway. The RGM was inaugurated on Monday at the Secunderbad station by AP Misra, member engineering, Railway Board and R Vijay Mohan, additional general manager, SCR.

The steel on surface of the rails form cracks due to constant friction from  train  wheels and hence grinding is necessary. Due to constant wear and tear, the rails also wear out over a period of time. Grinding of rail helps in extending life of the rails and delays the need for replacement.
